Given the choice between sitting in a sealed up boardroom for a couple of long hours, drinking weak tea and eating mediocre sandwiches whilst discussing your latest plans and ideas, or getting outside together for a round of golf, which would you prefer to do with your clients? Well, it seems the golf idea is a great one and here we will tell you why!
Golf is a relaxed sport and walking in the fresh air, socialising with colleagues and clients, with a little added mental challenge will release endorphins, natural mood-enhancing chemicals in your brain which will make you feel happy and relaxed instead of the tense and uptight feelings we can experience when stuck in the office. The golf course offers a level of privacy that you won’t find in any restaurant or bar, nobody wants their plans of world domination to be overheard by every Tom, Dick and Harry.
Business is strengthened by face to face relationships and by playing golf together, this will be taken to another level. You will be potentially spending a good few solid hours with your clients rather than an hour or so in a conventional meeting. Golf etiquette or lack of can reveal a lot about how a person conducts themselves and will show you what potential clients would be like to do business with. You’ll see if they are a sore loser, did they record their strokes correctly? Do they have good manners? You are going to get a glimpse of desirable and perhaps undesirable character traits that you would not otherwise see. In short, nothing is going to help you get to know your client better than this! There is, of course, also the added bonus of the opportunity to do more business over drinks and dinner afterwards.
Client golf days are a great opportunity to meet more people within the business and extend your network. Corporate golf days often have a formal sit-down meal and prize giving which may open up opportunities to sit next to new contacts and even potential new business partners.
Golf like any sport, comes with a whole host of must-have accessories and our golf-going clients tell us that these include; a fresh set of golf balls as old ones with scuffs and marks could compromise performance, a dark coloured towel as dirt is more easily hidden after you’ve given your expensive golf clubs a good wipe down and even better if the towel has a clip so you can find it easily. Divot tools are a must as according to golf etiquette, you should always repair your ball marks and any that you happen to see on the green with a divot tool or a tee. An extra ball marker or two in case you happen to be playing with someone who hasn’t brought one of their own and Tees which are vital to the teeing off process. A decent Umbrella which is fit for purpose is essential in order to avoid a good soaking which will only leave you feeling miserable for the rest of the round. And don’t forget a pocket-sized Pencil to keep your score!
